Fediverse is the name of a network of federated, independent social network services and websites.

The first attempts were made as early as 2008 with status.net on Identi.ca and from 2012 with GNU Social. It became more widespread in 2016 with Mastodon.

In 2018, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) defined the ActivityPub communication protocol, which all services and servers that offer these services use to communicate.

Regardless of which specific service you use, ActivityPub makes it possible to interact with any other user (limited in part by the capabilities of the service used).
